The thing I like about Isaiah is that even though I read through it before I go to bed, every now and then a verse will strike me as just that little bit special. Some of them stood out because of sermons that I have listened to either in church or downloaded, others I had never come across before. I guess that's what makes reading through the Bible such a blessing, because you come across verses you wouldn't normally read.
So as I lie in my bed with my Bible on my pillow, I keep my eyes peeled and a highlighter handy just in case I come by one of these little nuggets.
One of them was in Isaiah 38. Hezekiah was told by Isaiah (who relayed a message from God) that his time was up - he was about to be worm food - he was to 'die, and not live' (v2). Hez didn't like this and wept and pleaded with God for mercy... Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. Pretty standard pleading and praying - if you just leave it there. But what was really cool was God's response. God gave Hez a fifteen year extension to his life! Whoa! I like the response in verse 5 I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears. God is awesome.
And then there were the classic verses that came soon after:
Isaiah 40:28-31 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
But these were some that I hadn't come across before...
Isaiah 42:16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.
Isaiah 43:10-11 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
Isaiah 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.
Cool verses huh?
Well that's it for now. At the moment I am about to read Chapter 46 (out of 66). So nearly to the end. Yay!
